
On the steps of the Nevada Supreme Court members of the 2017 Legislature announce resolution to define marriage equality in the state constitution February 1.
The Nevada Assembly has listed AJR2 in the General File for tomorrow’s (March 9) Floor Session at 11:30 am. The bill basically changes the enjoined language in the state’s constitution regarding the definition of marriage. Assemblyman Nelson Araujo (D-Las Vegas) introduced the bill into this session after The Republican controlled legislature in 2015 let SJR13 die through inaction.
AJR2 faces it first hurdle to clear the Assembly floor and move to the Senate this session. The bill is expected to easily pass the Assembly which is controlled by the Democrats 27 – 15.
If the do pass recommendation, from the Assembly Legislative Operation and Election, is approved tomorrow, it would be referred to the Senate. The bill has a long way to go still having to make it out of the Senate. If approved by both houses in the 2017 legislative session, the 2019 Legislative session would have the option to repeat the process for approval. That accomplished it would then be a vote on the people in 2020 for final approval.
Also in the General File for tomorrow floor session is AB99 which requires to state Department of Health and Human Services to treat children as the gender they identify as and require training in working with GLBTQ individuals.
Tomorrow’s Assembly floor session can be watched online via the Nevada Legislature website. On the main page, click on meetings in the upper right corner. Locate Assembly Floor session and click on view. The meeting is set to start at 11:30am. Video usually starts 3 or 4 minutes before the scheduled meeting time.
