Six Day old OUR Center bustling with activities

It hasn’t even been open a week yet, but OUR Center is geared up to offer programs to the western Nevada GLBT community right away at the facility located at 1745 South Wells Ave. (just south the roundabout at South Wells and East Regency Way) in Reno.

HollerScholarFollowing its Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening over the weekend of April 29 and 30, the Center held its first activity on Tuesday Night, May 2, with “Holler at a Scholar” a weeknight study group open to all targeting high school and college level students providing a quiet study place. The computer lab at the Center will be available to those participating.   Study sessions are Tuesday nights from 5 pm to 8 pm. On Friday Night, May 6, OUR Center will host a Movie Night. For information about what movie and the showing time go to the OUR Center’s Facebook Page.movienight2

On Saturday, May 7, the first Yoga class will be held hostedYoga by Christopher Daniels at the Center at 9 am. Yoga will be offered each Saturday.

Northern Nevada Pride will also be looking for talented people to perform on the Wingfield Park Amphitheater stage during this year’s festival on July 23.  Auditions are this Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 15 from 2 to 4 pm at the Center. Those auditioning are being asked to bring their music on an electronic device (cell phone, Ipad, Ipod, tablet, laptop), NNPauditionsEntertainment must be family friendly.

OUR Center will host its annual Harvey Milk Day celebration on Friday, May 20 at the McKinley Arts and Cultural Center located at Keystone and Riverside Drive starting at 6 pm. The evening features a Pasta Sauce contest and Spaghetti Feed. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for Harvey Milkchildren 12 and under. The MilkMade Awards honoring individuals and organizations will presented to this years recipients in the following categories: Political Groundbreaker, Outstanding Ally, Trailblazer (over 50), Leader of Tomorrow (under 30) and Community Builder, during the event.

The Center also slightly altered it hours of operation for this week as follows:             Wednesday, May 4:   2 pm to 8 pm
                         Thursday, May 5: 2 pm – 8 pm
                         Friday, May 6: 2pm to 10 pm
                         Saturday, May 7 : 9am to 6 pm

OUR Center is currently working on a calendar to be available to the community and they ask for patience during their rapid growing pains after just having opened the long awaiting GLBT community Center.
